One of two Frenchmen aboard the Seaworthy, Artois spends almost all of his time perched in the crowsnest, on the lookout for ships, land, or anything else worth seeing. He seems to be very content with his job as a lookout, and unlike many members of the crew, he actually has a related job history in the field. He once worked in a similar capacity on various ships sailing out of Martinique, but then his love for fine wines (in vast quantities) caused the local seamen to consider him unemployable. Now, sailing under Captain Strathclyde, Artois found that he can pursue both of his passions: wining and spying. For the most part, Artois' near-contant devotion to the vino does not appear to decrease his spotting abilities, as he typically is the first to spot any approaching danger no matter how subtle.
Artois will sometimes go unnoticed in his crowsnest for long periods of time, only coming down to go below and get more wine. Sometimes, however, he will climb down and be a more active part of the crew. He often sleeps up the mast at his post, though sometimes he makes use of his hammock in the general crew quarters. Generally, he will take his rest whenever and wherever he grows tired from too much drink. Although conspicuously and proudly a Frenchman, Artois does not regularly interact with the French cook who resides on the ship.
