Seaworthy: A High Seas Adventure Comic

The Need: It has come to my attention, and almost certainly yours as well, that I am having a great deal of trouble updating my comic on time as of late. This is because of a number of reasons:

  • I am a procrastinator, especially when it comes to large, time consuming projects (like creating new comics)
  • The comics always take far longer to complete than my original time estimates
  • I also spend a lot of time at work and being social

I should make it clear that I am not late with updates because I don't like working on the comic. This is not true! I am very proud of Seaworthy, and I enjoy making it (once I get into the swing of it). The only solutions I can think of for making it easier to make my updates on time are:

  • Reduce the length/quality of the comic: REJECTED! I like the length of the comic as it is because I can tell a more developed story in a full-page comic than in a single-line strip. And reducing the quality would be like compromising my integrity as an artist.
  • Only update once a week: ALSO REJECTED! Twice a week is a full workload for an artist, but as a webcomic reader as well I know that long waits between comics can be painful. Two comics a week is already rather scanty, so I will not reduce the number further.
  • Build up a stockpile of completed comics: DING DING DING!

Of course, Choice C is always the correct one. By stockpiling completed comics I will have a safeguard against loss-of-time when a deadline approaches.

The Plan: Next week, starting on Monday, February 5, the plan begins. In addition to my regular work week, I will put in a 40-hour work week on the comic for the 5-day business week. After that, there will be an opportunity for "overtime" if I am not completely burned out by that point. Basically, I figure that I can totally complete one comic per day for the five or six days that I will work on it. Then, with that backlog built up behind me, I will have ample breathing room to leisurely work on the comic when I can find time while posting comics from the stockpile. Good idea, huh? Like I said on the main page, we shall see how well it works.

Updates during the "Seaworthy Shift" week will be posted to this page, as well as a few minor little news items on the main page. We'll see you here then. In the meantime, enjoy Seaworthy!
